How we score flights for comfort

Every flight on CalmFlights gets a single 0–10 Comfort Score. It isn't a marketing number — it's a weighted blend of six measurable signals, and this page explains exactly what goes into it, where the data comes from, and what it does (and doesn't) mean.

The six signals

What the score is built from

We weight each signal by how much it actually affects the experience of a nervous flyer. Turbulence and weather dominate because they drive how the flight feels; safety and heritage anchor the trust behind it.

Turbulence forecast

NOAA Graphical Turbulence Guidance (GTG)

The single biggest driver of how a flight feels. We read the upper-air turbulence index along the great-circle path between your two airports and the jet-stream position for the day, then normalise it to a 0–10 smoothness figure.

Weather along the route

Open-Meteo forecast API

Surface conditions at both airports plus enroute weather — thunderstorms, strong surface winds, low visibility and precipitation. Departure and arrival weather affect the bumpiest, most anxiety-inducing phases: climb-out and approach.

Published incident & audit history

Fatality-free streak, incidents in the last five years, and independent safety-audit standing. Top-tier carriers with decades of clean operation score highest.

Aircraft track record

Fleet & hull-loss database

The specific aircraft type's lifetime flights flown, hull-loss rate and fatal-incident history. Modern, high-volume types like the A320 and 787 families carry the strongest records.

Airline heritage

Carrier operating history

How long the airline has operated, its fleet size and average captain experience. Longevity and deep pilot experience correlate with smoother, better-managed operations.

A plain-language interpretation layer that turns the raw numbers into reassurance — what each figure actually means for your ride, framed the way an experienced pilot would explain it.

How the numbers combine

Each signal is first converted to its own 0–10 sub-score. We then take a weighted average using the percentages above, so a flight through calm air on a modern jet operated by a fatality-free airline lands near 9–10, while a red-eye crossing an active jet stream in unsettled weather sits lower.

Scores are recalculated whenever the underlying forecast changes, so the same route can read differently on two different days — exactly as it should, because the weather genuinely is different.

  • 8–10Very smooth expected — calm air, strong records across the board.
  • 5–7.9Comfortable with some bumps — normal flying, nothing unusual.
  • <5Bumpier ride likely — weather or turbulence is a factor today.

What the score is not

The Comfort Score is a comfort estimate, not a safety prediction. Commercial aviation is statistically the safest form of long-distance travel ever built, and the difference between our "calmest" and "bumpiest" flight on a given day is about how the ride feels — not whether it is safe. A low score never means a flight is dangerous.

Forecasts are exactly that: forecasts. Actual conditions can change, and pilots routinely adjust altitude and routing to find smoother air. Treat the score as a well-informed expectation, not a guarantee.
